Visitor & Travel Medical Insurance

Home-country policies and national health services generally stop at the US border. Visitor medical is what stands between a bad week and a bad year.

Who it is for

Families bringing parents and relatives to the United States, and employers whose staff have visitors arriving on a B-2 or visa-waiver trip.

  • Home-country coverage almost never pays a US hospital
  • US providers bill visitors at full rates
  • One fall or cardiac event can outcost the trip
  • Parents and in-laws visiting for weeks or months
  • Relatives attending a wedding, graduation or the birth of a grandchild
  • Green card applicants waiting on adjustment of status
  • Business visitors and short-term inbound assignees
  • Visitors who need a policy before an embassy or airline asks for proof

What is covered

Visitor medical is short-term travel coverage, not ACA major medical. It is designed for what happens unexpectedly on a trip.

New illness and injury

  • ER, urgent care, physician visits, hospital care
  • Surgery, diagnostics and prescriptions arising during the trip
  • Subject to your chosen deductible and policy maximum

Fixed benefit or comprehensive

  • Fixed-benefit: cheaper, pays set amounts – balance is yours
  • Comprehensive: pays a percentage after the deductible
  • The difference matters most in a serious claim

Acute onset of a pre-existing condition

  • Many plans exclude pre-existing conditions outright
  • Some cover sudden flare-ups needing immediate care
  • Usually the deciding factor for older visitors

Evacuation and repatriation

  • Emergency evacuation to an adequate facility
  • Repatriation of remains
  • Trip interruption features on some plans

How AIS helps

  • We read the exclusions. Visitor plans are sold on price and decided by fine print. We compare the pre-existing wording, the maximums per incident and the network discount, not just the premium.
  • Right length, right maximum. Coverage matched to the actual travel dates and to the visitor's age, with a policy maximum that would survive a real hospitalisation.
  • Extensions. If the trip is extended, we extend the policy – usually without a break in coverage if arranged before it lapses.
  • Provider access. Guidance on using a PPO network so the negotiated rate applies rather than the full billed charge.
  • Claims. We help submit the claim and chase the carrier, which is not something a family should be doing from another time zone.

One thing to be clear about

Visitor medical is temporary travel coverage.

  • Not a substitute for major medical
  • Does not satisfy employer or Marketplace requirements
  • Pre-existing conditions limited or excluded on most plans
  • We spell out what it covers before you buy
Common questions

Visitor insurance FAQ

Still unsure which plan type fits? Call 281-769-1180.

Yes – coverage can normally start the day after purchase, though anything that began before the effective date will not be covered. Buying before the flight is always the better option.

Routine management of a known condition is not covered by visitor medical. Some plans include limited benefits for an acute, unexpected onset of a pre-existing condition requiring emergency treatment – the definition and the limit vary a great deal, and that is the wording we compare for you.

Think about what a real event costs in the US – a few days in hospital after a cardiac event can exhaust a low maximum quickly. For older visitors we usually recommend a higher maximum and a larger deductible to hold the premium down.

Most visitor plans allow cancellation for a pro-rata refund of unused whole months, sometimes less an administrative fee, provided no claim has been filed. Terms differ by carrier and we will point out the specific rule.

Visitor medical is not a general requirement for a B-2 visa, though consulates and some programs do ask for proof of coverage. Families buy it because US medical costs are the real risk, not because a form demands it.
